The Silent Knight is the United States Armed Forces next-generation aircraft-mounted terrain avoidance radar. Designed as a multi-mode terrain following/terrain avoidance radar for both rotary- and fixed-wing aircraft. The United States Special Operations Command awarded the program's initial funding in December 2006 with the MH-47G helicopter to serve as the lead platform for the Silent Knight tactical radar. The development contract valued at $135.4 million was awarded to Raytheon in January 2007 with a maximum potential value of $164 million including six low rate initial production radars.
The Silent Knight will allow low-level flight in adverse weather while delivering navigation support, ground mapping and weather information to air crews. According to Raytheon, the new tactical radar will result lighter and require less power than its predecessors. Silent Knight program's scope also includes fielding on the MH-60M, CV-22 Block 30 and MC-130H aircraft.
